Boston brunch guide
Best Vegan Brunch Spots in and Around Boston
Tofu scrambles, JUST Egg sandwiches, and chick'n and waffles. Here are the brunch spots worth the wait.
Breakfast is the hardest meal to eat vegan. Dinner menus usually have a pasta or a curry you can work with. But brunch is built on eggs, butter, bacon, and cheese. The good news is that Boston has a real vegan brunch scene. You can get a vegan Benedict, a JUST Egg breakfast sandwich, and even fried chick'n on a Belgian waffle!
At Farro, I track every vegan dish at restaurants around Boston, so I started this list from that data: every open restaurant with vegan eggs, vegan breakfast meats, or vegan pancakes and waffles on the menu.
Lulu Green
All vegan · 246 W Broadway, South Boston, and 675 W Kendall St, Cambridge
For the ultimate vegan breakfast destination, make a reservation at Lulu Green. Everything on the menu is vegan, so you can order anything without asking a single question. Boston Magazine named it Best Vegan Restaurant in its Best of Boston awards for the second year in a row in 2026, and it opened a second location in Kendall Square this spring.
The brunch menu has a Middle Eastern lean. The Meatball Shakshuka ($24) comes with scrambled plant eggs in a slow-cooked red pepper and San Marzano sauce with warm za'atar pita. The Brunch Sandwich 2.0 ($17.55) is a chickpea egg, tofu bacon, and a potato pancake with cheddar, kale, avocado, and tahini on a pretzel bun. They also offer Brunch Tacos with seitan asada and scrambled plant eggs, an omelet of the day, and gluten-free Lulu Pancakes with fruit and local maple syrup. Lulu Green is also one of the few places on this list with a real brunch cocktail list, including a Bloody Lulu and an espresso martini made with oat milk.
Brunch hours are as follows.
South Boston: Sat 10 to 4
Cambridge: Sat 10 to 4, Sun 10 to 3
Veggie Galaxy
Vegetarian diner with a vegan bakery · 450 Massachusetts Ave, Central Square, Cambridge
Veggie Galaxy has been the default answer to "where do I take my vegan friend for brunch" since 2011. It is a retro chrome diner with counter stools, booths, and a pastry case, and it serves breakfast all day. It was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and its vegan lemon meringue pie has won national attention.
The vegan side of the menu covers all the diner classics: pancakes, stuffed French toast, chick'n and waffles, biscuits and mushroom gravy, a tofu scramble, and house-made tempeh bacon. The bakery makes vegan doughnuts on weekends.
One thing to know: Veggie Galaxy is vegetarian, not fully vegan. Real eggs and dairy cheese are on the menu, so say "vegan" when you order. Almost everything can be made vegan, and they even publish a guide that lists the modifications necessary. It does not take reservations, and weekend waits can run 30 to 60 minutes.
Rhythm 'n Wraps
All vegan · 1096 Commonwealth Ave, Allston · Brunch Saturday and Sunday only
Rhythm 'n Wraps started as a food truck in 2012, opened in Allston in 2018, and went fully vegan in 2021. The whole place runs on music and community, and the menu pulls from Mexican, Caribbean, Indian, and African cooking.
Brunch is weekends only (Saturday 11 to 2, Sunday 11 to 4), and it is worth planning around. The star is Chick'n 'n Waffles ($16): a Belgian waffle topped with crispy fried oyster mushrooms, fruit, agave, maple syrup, and a house hot sauce. Or you can order it on pancakes! They also offer a breakfast burrito with JUST Egg, black beans, and breakfast potatoes, and a Fast Break Sandwich with shiitake mushroom bacon, JUST Egg, cheese, and a hash brown on a brioche bun. The restaurant is closed Mondays.
Donut Villa Diner
Cambridge (20 Prospect St), Malden (1 Highland Ave), and Arlington (319 Broadway)
Donut Villa has a full vegan menu of its own, which is rare for a regular diner. The Malden shop dates back to the 1970s. The Bashllari family took it over in 2017 and opened Cambridge in 2021 and Arlington in 2023. All three share a retro neon look. The Arlington location has a bar and stays open late.
If you are hungry, get The Hungry Vegan ($17.99): tofu scramble, vegan bacon or house-made seitan sausage, home fries, toast, and fluffy vegan pancakes. The vegan menu also includes vegan waffles, including an Almond Joy and a Chocolate Covered Strawberry version with coconut whipped cream, and Vegan Chicken N Waffles ($18.99) with house seitan chicken. The vegan breakfast sandwich is JUST Egg and Violife cheese on an English muffin, and you can add Impossible sausage. And yes, it sells vegan doughnuts.
My Diner
South Boston (455 E 1st St) and Melrose (399 Main St)
My Diner is a small neighborhood diner with a whole vegan section on its menu. The Vegan Omelette ($12.95) is made from chickpea flour, and you can add vegan cheese or vegan bacon. There is also a tofu scramble with veggies, vegan waffles, vegan pancakes, and a side of vegan bacon.
It opens at 6 a.m. (7 on Sundays) and closes at 2 p.m., so it's a great pick for early risers. The Melrose shop has about a dozen tables.
The Friendly Toast
Back Bay, Harvard Square, Chestnut Hill, Burlington, Dedham, and North Andover
The Friendly Toast is the most reliable vegan brunch chain around Boston, and I wrote a full guide to its vegan menu. The menu marks vegan items with a V, which takes the guesswork out.
My pick is the Vegan Scramble ($18.50): seasoned tofu, vegan sausage, peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, and spinach on crispy hash browns, with a vegan avocado crema. The Vegan Breakfast Burrito ($18) is a strong second. Order a single vegan pancake on the side if you want something sweet.
One warning: the hash browns are vegan, but the home fries contain butter. The Kendall Square and Danvers locations have closed.
Red Lentil
Vegetarian and vegan · 600 Mount Auburn St, Watertown
Red Lentil is a longtime vegetarian and vegan restaurant, and its weekend brunch is the best for vegan Benedicts. The Benedict Florentine can be made with tofu scramble, tempeh bacon, tomato, and spinach on an English muffin with a house-made vegan hollandaise. They also offer a vegan French toast with banana-walnut compote, vegan pancakes made with sweet potato and dates, a vegan waffle, and a breakfast burrito with soy sausage and tofu scramble.
Brunch is available Sat and Sun 10 to 3.
Bistro781
336 Moody St, Waltham · Takes reservations
Bistro781 is an upscale-casual bistro with a separate vegan menu. If you want a sit-down brunch with a reservation and a real bar, this is it. Weekend brunch runs Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 3.
From the vegan menu, get the Coconut Milk French Toast ($23), sourdough in a spiced coconut milk batter. The Tofu Scramble ($20) comes with cauliflower, sweet potato, cherry tomatoes, sourdough, and home fries. There is also Zucchini Rancheros.
Order from the vegan menu, not the regular brunch menu. The French toast and avocado toast on the regular menu are made on challah, which contains egg.
Cafe Landwer
Back Bay (653 Boylston St), Audubon Circle (900 Beacon St), and Cleveland Circle (383 Chestnut Hill Ave)
Cafe Landwer is an Israeli café with big, bright brunch plates and vegan dishes marked on the menu. The Vegan Breakfast ($22) is a spread: a vegan omelet, chopped salad, guacamole and salsa, matbucha, skordalia, and hummus. The Vegan Meatball Shakshuka ($21) skips the eggs and serves plant-based meatballs in the spiced tomato and pepper stew with tahini and pita. It takes reservations.
The menu notes that the fryer is shared.
Not Ya Mama's Vegan Cafe
All vegan · 7 Church St, Salem
Not Ya Mama's also made my pumpkin spice latte list, and it earns a spot here too. Everything is vegan, and the breakfast sandwiches are the main attraction. The Sausage Egg N' Cheese ($13.50) is JUST Egg, sausage, cheese, a hash brown, and chipotle aioli on an English muffin or a bagel. The French Toast Breakfast Sandwich ($17.50) swaps the bread for two slices of French toast. They also offer plain French toast, a breakfast burrito, and a case of vegan doughnuts.
It is open Wednesday to Sunday only, and weekend hours are from 11 to 5. It is inside a mall on Church St, and in October Salem is packed, so go early.
Quick vegan breakfast sandwiches
Not every vegan breakfast needs a table. These are grab-and-go spots with one or two dishes worth knowing.
Blackbird Doughnuts (South End, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Brighton, Harvard Square, Newton Centre, Watertown). The Vegan Breakfast Sandwich ($6.95) is JUST Egg, Impossible sausage, and vegan cheddar on a vegan brioche bun. They always have a few doughnut options marked (v) for vegan.
Mamaleh's Delicatessen (Kendall Square and Brookline). The Vegan Egg Sandwich is a JUST Egg and spinach patty with Violife, scallion Tofutti, and avocado on a bagel. The all-vegan Kibitz Corner pop-up has closed.
Cafe Bonjour (55 Temple Place, Downtown Crossing). A small, family-run breakfast spot that will swap JUST Egg into any omelet, scramble, or egg sandwich, with plant-based sausage on the side. Ask for each swap.
Revive & Co. (Weymouth and Milton). A juice bar with JUST Egg and Beyond sausage breakfast sandwiches, bowls, and wraps. Only the dishes marked with a V are vegan. The "Plant-Based Taco Crumble" bowl has real egg and cheddar.
Trident Booksellers & Cafe (338 Newbury St). The food is fine, but the setting is the real draw: a two-floor bookstore café that has served breakfast all day since 1984. Get the tofu scramble with Old Bay.
Closed: don't make the trip
Many vegan brunch lists online still include places that have closed. As of September 2026, these are gone: Whole Heart Provisions, Beatnic (formerly by CHLOE), True Bistro, Walnut Grille, PlantPub, Taco Party, and NU Kitchen's Somerville café, which closed in August 2026.
