Boston campus guide

The best vegan restaurants near Suffolk University

Eleven places within a 10 minute walk of campus, three of them fully vegan.

Street map of downtown Boston. Sargent Hall and the Modern Theatre mark Suffolk University. Eleven numbered dots run from Boston Public Market in the north, through Downtown Crossing and the Financial District, to Chinatown and Tremont Street in the south.
The eleven restaurants below, numbered in the order they appear. Suffolk sits in two clusters: Sargent Hall on Tremont Street, and the residence halls behind the Modern Theatre on Washington Street.

Being in the center of downtown Boston has its perks. One of those is access to a huge selection of vegan food! I’ll go through all the spots you should know about, from the fully vegan ones (three within walking distance) to places you might never think to look that have surprisingly good options.

Let’s start with the fully vegan or vegetarian places.

Fully vegan

My Thai Vegan Cafe

3 Beach St, 2nd floor·6 min walk from the Washington St dorms

Thai is usually pretty vegan-friendly, but My Thai (is the name a pun on mai tai?) takes it to the extreme. They have veggie versions of shrimp, beef, chicken, and duck, so this is the place to go if you’re tired of tofu. They’re also a family-owned business.

Cocobeet

100 City Hall Plaza·3 min walk from Sargent Hall

I tell my wife that I can always clock a vegan restaurant by its name, and any name with “beet” in it is usually a dead giveaway. Cocobeet is a great option for the health-conscious among us, and it is also entirely gluten-free. They specialize in juices and bowls.

Jennifer Lee's Gourmet Bakery

100 Hanover St, inside Boston Public Market·7 min walk from Sargent Hall

On the other side of the health spectrum, we have Jennifer Lee’s Gourmet Bakery. First and foremost, this is THE place for vegan desserts. And I mean that literally; I don't think there are any other options now that Fomu is closed. So make sure you name-drop it regularly for at least a month leading up to your birthday. They have vegan brownies, donuts, cookies; the list goes on. But they also have equally indulgent sandwiches. For instance, the classic “Sa'sage, Eggz 'n' Cheeze”. Written like a spam email so you can be sure every ingredient is plant-based!

Vegetarian

Mother Juice

100 Hanover St, inside Boston Public Market·7 min walk from Sargent Hall

Another good place for smoothies and juices. They also have oatmeal, acai bowls, and chia seed pudding. It’s a good place for a quick grab-and-go breakfast. They are almost entirely plant-based, but they do use honey, which is not a plant, so keep that in mind.

Clover Food Lab

160 Federal St·5 min walk from the Washington St dorms

They briefly went out of business; now they are back! The location near me is still closed for some reason, so count your lucky stars. Vegetarian fast food with lots of vegan options. Best place for a late-night plant-based chicken strip snack

Ordinary restaurants with real vegan options

Vaanga Boston

102 Water St·7 min walk from either campus cluster

Vaanga Boston is a south indian restaurant with a heavily vegetarian menu. In terms of vegan selection, they have the usual options - many dishes with potatoes, chickpeas, lentils, etc. You can never go wrong with Indian.

Fuji

100 High St, inside High Street Place·6 min walk from the Washington St dorms

Fuji is a sushi restaurant in High Street Place Food Hall with a vegetarian section that lists a number of rolls and bowls that can be made vegan. But note that the tempura options all contain egg.

Genki Ya

232 Tremont St·7 min walk from the Washington St dorms

Genki Ya is a Japanese restaurant with a decent vegetable maki selection. They also have mushroom, vegetable, and sweet potato tempura, which, unlike at Fuji, do NOT contain egg and are vegan. They’re open until 12:45 Fri-Sat.

DIG

277 Washington St·4 min walk from the Washington St dorms

DIG is like a healthy fast food bowl place. The only vegan protein choice is tofu, but you can pair it with a variety of different sides to suit your fancy.

The Q

660 Washington St·6 min walk from the Washington St dorms

The Q is a Mongolian hot pot restaurant. They confirmed they can use veggie broth for the hot pot. They also have some vegan entrees including Kungpao Tofu and Paradise Garden, along with some of the side veggies like string beans and bok choy. The mapo tofu is not vegan, but they can leave out the pork to make it so if you ask.

Liuyishou Hotpot Boston

702 Washington St·7 min walk from the Washington St dorms

Liuyishou Hotpot Boston offers two different vegan bases (mushroom or tomato) for their Hot Pot, which makes it a pretty good option.

How this list was made

Farro reads restaurants’ own published menus and identifies vegan dishes. I gather additional information and contact restaurants to refine the labels and confirm which items are vegan. For this post, I started with every restaurant within one mile of Suffolk with at least one vegan dish. This included hundreds of locations, so I narrowed it down to the most interesting and convenient spots.

Walking times are estimates. All data, including addresses, hours, and menus, were last checked in August 2026. Always confirm ingredients and preparation with the restaurant if some ingredients could harm you.

This guide covers eleven places. Farro covers the rest: which dishes are vegan at any Boston restaurant, ordinary ones included, with prices, on a map. It is what the eleven above were picked from.
